The History of Hyaluronic Acid

In the 1930s, researchers discovered a natural substance in the body that they named hyaluronic acid. They found that it played a key role in numerous areas of the body including the maintenance of skin volume and hydration. In the early 2000’s, the first hyaluronic acid facial filler received approval in Canada and the United States for the correction of facial wrinkles and folds. Today, hyaluronic acid-based facial fillers are the fastest growing non-surgical aesthetic procedure in North America.

JUVÉDERM® is made of hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the body and retains water under the skin to smooth away lines, restore lost volume and maintain skin hydration. Much like a sponge, its primary function is to bind and absorb water, which creates volume in the face. In fact, hyaluronic acid can absorb more than 1,000 times its weight – acting like a super sponge under your skin. Hyaluronic acid can be thought of as the body’s internal moisturizer. As the skin ages and is exposed to environmental pollutants and ultraviolet rays, the cells lose the ability to produce hyaluronic acid. As a result, the skin begins to lose volume, often resulting in the formation of facial wrinkles and folds.

JUVÉDERM® achieves facial rejuvenation by replacing hyaluronic acid lost over time, smoothing lines, restoring lost skin volume, and keeping your skin hydrated. Best of all, the results are instantaneous, look natural, and may last up to a year3 with no downtime.

How it Works

Skin rejuvenation treatments with JUVÉDERM® are quick, simple, comfortable, and non-surgical. The procedure will have you looking and feeling instantly refreshed. The treatment administered by your cosmetic doctor involves subtle and strategically placed JUVÉDERM®injections under the skin to restore and boost individual facial features.

It will add volume and definition to facial features while keeping your appearance looking natural, symmetrical, and well-balanced. Whether you are interested in enhancing facial features or refreshing and rejuvenating your appearance, JUVÉDERM® can be used to:

  • Soften smile lines
  • Restore lost fullness in your cheeks
  • Enhance lips
  • Contour your jaw line

The treatment is comfortable thanks to the patented formulation of JUVÉDERM® XC (extra comfort) that includes lidocaine – a localized pain reliever. After the treatment, the appearance of lines on your face will be reduced, your lips will appear fuller and more defined, and your cheeks plump. You will leave looking naturally refreshed – so that everyone will notice, but no one will know!

Refresh and Rejuvenate

JUVÉDERM® can instantly refresh and rejuvenate your appearance by smoothing unwanted lines, restoring natural contours and replacing lost cheek volume. JUVÉDERM® is placed beneath wrinkles and folds to ‘fill in’ or ‘plump up’ the depression. The most appropriate lines to treat with JUVÉDERM® are those that are described as static lines you can see when your face is not moving (like smile lines). The most commonly treated areas include smile lines (or nasolabial folds), mouth lines (or marionette lines), smoker lines (or vertical lip lines), cheeks or chin.

What is Bioserum anyways?

Bioserum, made by Neocutis, is an intensive anti-aging treatment.  It is applied daily as part of a skin rejuvenating regimen.  It is charged with an unprecedented amount of human growth factors, interleukins and other cytokines to help nourish, energize and rejuvenate the skin.  Growth factors are the latest buzzword in cosmetic ingredients.  They are composed of amino acids, which bind together to form peptides and proteins.

  • Made In SWITZERLAND, Suitable For All Skin Types, Results seen in as little as 7 days
  • Skin looks plump with increased hydration and radiant luminosity
  • Signs of fine lines and wrinkles appear to be virtually erased and softened
  • Improves skin tone and texture for renewed luminosity and radiance
  • Non-Comedogenic, Dermatologist & Ophthalmologist Tested, FREE of Color Additives, Fragrance FREE, Paraben FREE

Bioserum helps boost skin’s restorative power to visibly lift, firm and smooth the appearance of aging skin. This complete skin revitalizer helps deliver essential amino acids, stable vitamin C to help lock in collagen, and a bio-mimetic peptide which has been shown to help minimize collagen and elastin loss associated with environmental factors and aging. Bio-processed algae extracts helps tighten and smooth the appearance of skin. A high concentration of hyaluronic acid helps hydrate and plump up the appearance of fine lines. Also available as an Intensive Spot Treatment in a portable pen applicator for stubborn lines and wrinkles.

Personally, one of my FAVORITE treatment modalities is to use Bioserum to target stubborn lines; you can use a Clarisonic Opal to massage the bioserum in.  This optimizes absorption & enhances the benefits.  You can target crow’s feet, lines around the mouth, 11s…and the list goes on… AMAZING!  This is a great way to extend the life of your botox treatments.

b. YOUTHFUL: the evil eye & botox

Things to know before you decide to get Botox:

1.  It is imperative to express your honest expectations for what you want out of your botox treatment.  As a physician, I would say this about any medical procedure.  It is not wise to go into a doctor’s office and tell them you want to “look younger.”  Be very specific about what is bothering you.

Is it the lines between your eyebrows?

Is it the lines on your forehead?

Is it the lines around your eyes?

2.  Botox does not work immediately.  It takes a minimum of 5 days to START having an effect on the muscles of facial expression.  You will see it’s full effect at 14 days post injection.  Having high dose botox injected does not make it work any faster.

3.  The evil eye:  Many women LOVE the lateral brow lift they can get with botox.  There are women who get botox for this reason alone.  Most men dislike it & feel that it makes them look like a cross between Dr. Spock & Dr. Evil.  It is all in the eye of the beholder.  I, personally, love the lateral brow lift I get with botox.  Be sure you discuss this with the physician injecting prior to your treatment.

4.  More is not better.  Let me say it again,  more is not better.  Botox is a toxin that works on your facial muscles to relax them.  Treatments should be administered no earlier than 3 months apart.  You should think twice if you are hearing anything different.  These are the recommendations of the manufacturers of the drug & the FDA.  Early treatment will only cause your face to look unnaturally “frozen.”

5.  Ask, ask, ask, ask.  Ask your doctor every question you can think of.  Botox is a medical procedure.  I cannot emphasize this enough.  Would you go just anywhere to have an operation?  Would you walk in and not ask any questions?  Treat botox like it’s minimally invasive surgery on your face.  Ask every single question you can think of.  If you do not feel you are getting the answers you need, you might consider going elsewhere.

6.  Stop taking ibuprofen & fish oil 7 days prior to your injection to minimize bruising.    Some patients take extra measures by taking Arnica and or eating pineapple, which contains bromelain, a natural anti-inflammatory agent.  Alcohol can also promote bruising, so please avoid it for 24 hours after your treatment.

7.  Stay upright for 2-4 hours post treatment.  This allows the botox to settle into the muscles, where it is intended to be.  It is recommended that you not workout with weights, go to yoga or spin class for 24 hours after your botox treatment.

b. youthful – what is restylane?

Nasolabial folds before Restylane treatment.

Nasolabial folds after 3 mL of Restylane. Individual results may vary.

Products in the Restylane family add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Restylane and Restylane-L can also add fullness and definition to lips in patients over 21 years, providing natural-looking results with just one treatment.

Restylane works immediately by adding volume to smooth away wrinkles. A clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, Restylane is specifically formulated to act like your body’s own hyaluronic acid, and eventually breaks down naturally.

After treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, or tenderness. These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 7 days in nasolabial folds and less than 14 days in lips. Swelling may be more likely in patients under 36 years, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years.

b. YOUTHFUL…Botox & its benefits

Benefits and Side Effects

Botox is most effective on  “dynamic” wrinkles that appear while you’re moving your face.   Dynamic wrinkles occur when we use our muscles to form facial expressions. During facial expressions such as smiling and frowning our muscles contract and cause our skin to wrinkle. For example, when we smile our eye wrinkles (“crow’s feet”) become prominent and when we frown the vertical lines between our eyebrows (“the 11’s”) become noticeable. When we are young our skin springs back to its original position when we finish making the facial expression (at rest) but as we get older the dynamic wrinkles remain on the skin to form static wrinkles.

Botox can be used to treat dynamic & static wrinkles that have formed & as a preventative in areas where wrinkles have not yet set in.  Deep set wrinkles will require multiple treatments spaced 3-4months apart.

If you’re breastfeeding, pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, the FDA recommends that you talk to your doctor before starting Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin.  It is best to receive Botox after you are done nursing.  Botox is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Side effects are possible: headaches, bruising, pain at the site of injection, and, in fewer than 1% of cases, drooping eyelids or eyebrows that return to their natural position within a few months.

If you decide to give it a try:

Don’t be a pill. You’re more likely to get a bruise at the site of the needle injection if you’re taking aspirin or ibuprofen; these medications thin the blood and increase bleeding which causes the bruise. Skip the pills for two weeks in advance of your treatment. You should also tell your doctor — before treatment — about any supplements you’re taking, even if they’re “natural,” because some (such as fish oil pills, gingko, or vitamin E) also thin blood. Your doctor may ask you not to use those supplements for two weeks before your treatment.

Less is More. Ask your doctor for a more natural, expressive look. Your doctor can adjust the dose accordingly.  You can always add more, but it will take 3 months for unnecessary Botox to go away.

Don’t party on. Spas and parties are fun, but not for injections. Botox should only be administered by a doctor who is board-certified.  Drinking alcohol & inadvertently rubbing your forehead could cause Botox to spread to unwanted areas, causing issues such as eyelid droop.  It’s best not to mix alcohol with Botox.  Remember, it is a medical procedure & you want the results you are paying for.
